Mackinnon Clan Tour of the Isle of Skye!

Mackinnon Clan Assemble!

Mackinnon clan gathering for a tour of the Isle of SkyeMackinnon (and ‘McKinnon’) relations are spread all over the world and it is always a pleasure to meet new-found family. I had the privilege of driving 3 generations of Mackinnons from the USA on Saturday. They had stopped off on the Isle of Skye for a day to trace some of their roots and visit the homeland. We had a day of  clan history in the sunshine and showers!

One significant visit was to the beautiful old ruins of the 16th century Kilchrist church. Many Mackinnons have been buried there over the centuries. From there we headed to Kyleakin to visit ‘our castle’, Castle Moil. Eilean Donan Castle was also included on the itinerary so they could visit a castle that still had its roof! There followed a loop around the north east of the Isle of Skye. The north may not have so many members of Clan  but the scenery made up for it!

Mackinnon Family Tours?

Don’t worry – all clans and surnames are of course very welcome on the tours! However as a Mackinnon myself it was a special treat to meet these folk. We share a common and fascinating history. The Isle of Skye holds such a significant place in our clan history and I hope to have more opportunity to do this type of tour in the future: Customised Mackinnon Clan Tours! Visit all the hotspots and focus on our origins and the many family stories of the area. There’s our ancestor, Captain John Mackinnon, who aided Bonnie Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden. Explore the Mackinnon roots of Drambuie liqueur and discover the reason we have a wild boar with a bone in its mouth on our crest! If any other Mackinnons out there are interested in coming for a similar tour please do get in touch!
