Your Tour Guide – Stuart Mackinnon from Elgol
Stuart Mackinnon was born and brought up in the little village of Elgol which lies at the foot of the Isle of Skye’s famous Cuillin Hills. There he attended one of the smallest and most charming primary schools in the world (where pupil numbers were in the single figures) before moving on to Skye’s only secondary school in the island’s ‘capital’, Portree.
Stuart went on to study Gaelic and Communications at Scotland’s ‘National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture’, Sabhal Mor Ostaig and since then has studied theology in Dingwall and Edinburgh. In 2007 Stuart started working with his parents, Anne and Seumas Mackinnon, as a tour guide and skipper on their world-renowned boat trips on Skye and he soon realised this was a work he really enjoyed and had a genuine and contagious enthusiasm for. It was a great experience to share a place which he so loved with others, and doing so cause his own appreciation for his roots and home to grow day by day. During that time he made various appearances on television and radio to talk about the area, as well as hosting his own weekly show on the local radio station, Cuillin FM.
In 2013 Stuart suffered a serious knee injury which put an end to his sea-going tourism career (as well as giving him a welcome excuse to never take up marathon running!). In 2016 he is delighted to be able to return to tourism work through Misty Isle Tours. This new venture gives him the opportunity to put what he has learned through his years of working with his parents to good use. The tours currently offered are a work in progress and we believe they always will be: Our goal is to strive to offer the very best possible experience of the Isle of Skye and so the tours on offer will always continue to develop and improve and we look forward to introducing you to new features and experiences along the way!
